Thesis Defense: Ana I. Torre-Bastida

Ana I. Torre-Bastida defended his PhD thesis work at the University of the Basque Country on April 9th, 2018, being awarded Cum Laude mention (International Doctorate), and obtaining their degree in “Doctoral Programme in Computer Engineering”.

Ana’s thesis, which title was “A query rewriting approach in incompletely aligned datasets with quality estimation”, revolves around the lack in the ecosystem of Linked Open Data (LOD) of new efficient query mechanisms capable of abstracting the user from the complexity derived from the quantity and heterogeneity of the data sets and available vocabularies existing in it. This is the reason why this thesis considers necessary to develop a framework for development and evaluation in this area, focused on the rewriting of SPARQL queries, and that is capable of modeling and solving part of the main challenges detected, among which we highlight: more complex transformation rules that go beyond the simple preservation of semantics, quality measures capable of reflecting the value of the rewriting process to the user and evaluation benchmarks on which the system can measure the level of compliance of these objectives, among others.
